According to a Kansas City Star article the populations of Fairway,Merriam,Mission,Mission Hills,Prairie Village,Roeland Park and Westwood all Kansas suburbs of Kansas City in the Northeast part of Johnson County are declining. Prairie Village has been the biggest population loser overall, shedding more than 1,850 people to a total of just less than 21,500 residents. Roeland Park and Westwood have each lost more than 10 percent of their people since 1990.
1990 Census:62,319. 2000 Census:59,648. 2008 estimate:57,910.
That’s a 7.1 percent population loss in 18 years, using Mid-America Regional Council figures for 2008. By comparison — in Kansas City, south of the Missouri River — the population loss has been only 3.5 percent since 1990. So northeast Johnson County has lost population at twice the rate of that part of Kansas City since 1990. Read more:Older areas of Johnson County feel a bit hollow –KansasCity.com
