Blue Valley schools in Southern Johnson County,Kansas will need to cut at least $6.25 million from next year’s budget because of reductions in state funding. That could mean larger classes,programs reduced or eliminated,and possible teacher layoffs,Superintendent Tom Trigg told a public forum Thursday at Blue Valley West High in Overland Park.
A year ago,the Blue Valley school board reduced the current year’s budget by almost $5 million. If the district must reduce its teaching staff,the superintendent said,he hopes that can be accomplished through attrition. But he said layoffs are “a very real possibility.” Also being considered,he added,are higher fees for extracurricular activities.
