500K IT Job-Training Grant for Kansas City

Information Technology in Kansas CityThe Full Employment Council announced Thursday that it is one of three agencies nationally getting “coding bootcamp” funds to provide job training in information technology,according to a KC Star article.

Agencies in Kansas City,Minneapolis and Louisville are getting funds channeled from the White House Office of Science and Technology.

Kansas City’s $500,000 grant,received through the Missouri Division of Workforce Development and U.S. Department of Labor,will be used to combine classroom instruction with on-the-job learning.

Training is designed for job hunters who have been out of work for 27 weeks or more,the official definition of long-term unemployment.

In Kansas City,ThinkBig Partners has committed to providing free training space for the program,designed to teach people how to write computer code.

The Full Employment Council said it plans to launch the program in August. The agency said it is working with Metropolitan Community Colleges,the University of Central Missouri and other area schools and employers to get adjunct faculty for the training.

The agency also said local employers such as the University of Kansas Hospital,WireCo,Children’s Mercy Hospital and Air Charter Team have agreed to provide work-based instruction.
